Main duties of placement:
  • Day to day care of 15 hospice inpatients.
  • Daily allocation meeting.
  • Consultant ward round twice weekly.
  • Clerking elective and emergency admissions (2-3 daily).
  • Family meetings.
  • Discharge planning.
  • Weekly MDT.
  • Weekly handover.
Typical work pattern:

Full shift.

Learning opportunities:
  • Participation in audit.
  • Secretary for Doctors' Meeting.
  • Ward-based teaching.
  • Attendance at Palliative Medicine Outpatients and Community visits.
  • Experience teaching medical students (ward-based and in small tutorials).
Teaching:

Induction includes series of tutorials and assessment of opioid calculation.

Weekly multidisciplinary education (external speakers/journal club/complex case review).

Stobhill Grand Round.

Wide exposure to physical and psychological issues affecting patients at end of life.

Opportunity to develop communication skills especially around sensitive issues e.g. DNACPR, place of care and prognosis.
