Main duties of placement:

Daily consultant/SpR lead ward round; review and assessment of both emergency admissions and elective patients for pre-op work-up.

Theatre sessions with SpR as time/duties allow.

HDU OOH cover.

Typical work pattern:

0830 - 1630 hours shift pattern (includes AM trauma round), on call "long days" 0830-2030hrs that comprises on call for admissions OOH of emergency patients and HDU cover.

Split nightshift cover for INS.

Learning opportunities:
  • Ward-based teaching (ward round).
  • Once weekly teaching sessions timetabled.
  • Daily trauma round.
  • Neuro-oncology MDT/Journal club as duties allow.
Teaching:

As above; timetabled 1hr sessions once weekly (SpR lead teaching) and seminars in INS (consultant-led). Day release for compulsory FY2 teaching requirements.

Unique selling points:

Unique opportunity to work in national centre for neurosurgery; wide variety of cases comprising emergency management and chronic diseases. Good clinical opportunities for practical procedures/clinical skills. Very well supported by senior SpR team for teaching/advice.
