Main duties of placement:
  • Daily ward round in all three wards (trauma, HDU, elective/post-op).
  • Clerk-in of elective patients.
  • Discharges.
  • On-call: accepting A+E referrals, ward referrals and GP referrals. This can be a very busy day, however there is opportunity to attend clinic and theatre during this shift.
Typical work pattern:

On-call day: 0800- 2100

Ward day: 0800-1615

Half-day post on-call weekend: 0800-1200

(Sometimes cross-cover of wards is required when there is a half-day shift).

HAN: 1 week in total split into 3 nights and 4 nights

Learning opportunities:

Trauma meeting daily (0800); relevant teaching, good learning opportunity and catch-up of the past 24 hours on-call.

Attending clinic and theatre when down on the rota to do so or when ward-based duties are complete.

Teaching:

Trauma meeting daily at 0800.

No allocated formal teaching.
