Main duties of placement:

Rotation through wards for acute surgical receiving, general surgery and colorectal surgery.

Participation in:

  • daily ward rounds.
  • outpatient clinics (two per week).
  • theatre sessions (at least one per week).
  • on call (assessment of new admissions and referrals).
  • administrative duties (discharge summaries).
Typical work pattern:
  • Full shift rota compliant at Band 1A.
  • Combination of 8am to 4pm and night shift.
Learning opportunities:
  • Excellent opportunities at clinic and in theatre.
  • Opportunity for audit.
Teaching:
  • Weekly surgical meeting on Monday lunchtime.
  • Monthly Morbidity and mortality meetings.
  • Postgraduate Medical Education meetings on Wednesday lunchtime (Protected teaching time).

  • Direct supervision by Consultants.
  • Own minor ops list at least once per month.
