Placement Geriatric Medicine
Year F1

Main Duties of Placement

Ward based cover.

Ward rounds.

Rotations around sub specialties in medicine for the elderly including acute frailty, stroke, geriatric orthopaedic rehabilitation and general rehabilitation.

Out of hours cover for acute medicine and ward cover for general medical wards.

Typical Work Pattern

4 months in medicine for the elderly and stroke wards with opportunities to rotate into different wards. Nights spent on H@N cover. Full shifts until 9.30pm with handover at 9pm. Weekend daytime cover 3 times in 4 month block.

Learning Opportunities

Weekly geriatric medicine teaching, regular ward based and departmental M&M sessions, informal ward based teaching. Weekly MDT meetings.  Weekly Wednesday medical unit educational meeting. Thursday Core trainee-led F1 case-based teaching every second week. Friday lunchtime journal club/trainee forum. Opportunities for support with QI projects.

Teaching

Mandatory FY1 teaching programme covering the foundation programme syllabus. There are hospital postgraduate meetings at least monthly. Bi-monthly Thursday CMT-led F1 teaching.

Unique Selling Points

Close and supportive working with Consultant staff. Excellent and friendly nursing and paramedical support, including AHP consultant, ANP and frailty practitioners. Smaller medical unit in close proximity to Glasgow.  Exposure to sick patients living in a poorer demographic area.
