Placement Renal Medicine
Year F2
Region West
Hospital(s) University Hospital Monklands, Airdrie
Main Duties of Placement

Daily ward rounds.

Covering regular dialysis unit.

Clerking and assessment of new admissions.

Three week block in Acute Receiving Unit.

Typical Work Pattern

Band 2b.

15 week rolling rota.

Usually on base ward.

Occasionally required to cross cover another specialty.

Learning Opportunities

Ward-based teaching.

Excellent experience gained by clerking in acutely sick renal patients and presenting to consultant.

Teaching

FY2 clinical skills week in block one (includes ALS course).

Mandatory F2 days away teaching.     

Protected teaching Tuesday lunchtime.

Wednesday lunchtime hospital teaching.

Monthly medical academic half day.

Unique Selling Points

Close supervision by consultants.

Opportunity to get experience inserting central lines.

Opportunity to become familiar with very abnormal biochemistry.

Excellent opportunity to become skilled at assessing fluid balance.
