Placement Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery

Main Duties of Placement

The post will be mainly based at University Hospital Wishaw which is becoming the main trauma unit for NHS Lanarkshire. The day time duties include a mixture of ward-based sessions along with dedicated theatre and clinic sessions. You will be supported by senior trainees, Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Consultants. Both day and night receiving oncall session at UHWishaw will be run by a senior trainee, but you will contribute to these sessions as a valued member of this team. University Hospital Hairmyres will become the main elective orthopaedic site. You will have the opportunity to attend educational theatre and clinic sessions there. There will be no ward cover or OOH at UHH. A full induction including Orthosim and regular teaching will be provided. There is a twice daily handover with senior supervision. 

Typical Work Pattern

Full shift.

10 doctor rota.

Mainly based at University Hospital Wishaw with some daytime sessions at University Hospital Hairmyres.

Resident support from senior tier (e.g. ST or SAS doctor).

Learning Opportunities

The induction will include Orthosim training on common orthopaedic emergencies.

There will be formal weekly teaching and ample informal teaching on the wards, clinics, theatres and trauma meetings.

There are dedicated theatre and clinic weeks that can be tailored to individual learning needs.

Opportunity to be involved in quality improvement projects and research.

Teaching

Mandatory teaching.

Twice weekly formal teaching; departmental and joint ortho radiology teaching.

Site-based Grand Round.

Foundation Programme teaching and Simulation.

Unique Selling Points

The re-configured service (Aug/Sep 19) will be one of the largest trauma units in Scotland. The FY2 rota will have 10 doctors and be supported by resident senior rota. Large range of subspecialty Orthopaedic interests. New Orthosim induction course. Chief resident / registrar support.

Please note the service reconfiguration will occur in late summer 2019; some of these posts may start at UHH if the changes do not occur before 7th August 2019. More information available from FPD’s. Full induction etc. will be provided regardless.
