Linked applications

  • In Scotland we allow linked applicants to express a preference to maintain a link in the process of being matched to a Group e.g. E01.
  • All applicants will be allocated independently on the basis of their own PIA when being matched to a Programme e.g. E01004.
  • Links will typically be honoured in the Group matching process if both applicants have listed exactly the same order of Group preference and there are sufficient vacancies for both applicants.
  • The national algorithm will match a linked pair using the lower of the PIA of the two applicants. If the link is broken applicants will be allocated independently on the basis of their own PIA.

  • The Scottish Foundation School allocates applicants first to a Group e.g. E01 and then to a Programme e.g. E01004.
  • Regional allocation (e.g. to the East region) is not part of the allocation process therefore it is not possible to link two applications to the level of region only.
  • If linked applicants rank their Group preferences differently the link will be broken, and they will be allocated independently.
  • This may result in being allocated to different region.

Linked applications are NOT possible when applying for a Foundation Priority Programme (FPP). Linking is only possible in the Foundation Programme (FP) and you can only link to one other applicant. The rank of the lower ranking applicant will be used to allocate both linked applicants to a UoA and Group and Programme.

Your link will be broken if either applicant:

  • accepts an offer for a Foundation Priority Programme (FPP)
  • is approved for pre-allocation to a foundation school
  • does not rank foundation schools in the same order of preference as the other applicant
The link could also be broken if there are not two places available in any foundation school at the point that the allocation algorithm attempts to place the linked applicants in the same foundation school.

Yes. the Scotland Foundation School allows matching to both group and programme level as long as both applicants rank groups and programme in the same order.
