Westward training programmes
GP practices within the Westward GP Speciality Training programme are situated across the
Westward side of the East of Scotland Deanery. Our practices centre around the City of Perth and
extend out to Aberfeldy in the North, Tillicoultry in the West, Kinross in the South, and Dundee in the
East. There are a good variety of small and large practices based in both urban and rural settings. All
practices have a multi-professional team approach to primary care and all team members are involved
in supporting and teaching their trainees.
Our hospital posts are based around Perth Royal Infirmary, Ninewells Hospital Dundee and Forth
Valley Royal Hospital. We also have Community Hospital posts in Crieff, and Psychiatry posts in
Murray Royal Perth and Carse view Dundee. Rotations are created with the location of hospital posts
and practices in mind while ensuring a balanced experience. GP Out of Hours work can consider the
centre closest to your home or practice.
The Westward programme is situated in the very centre of Scotland providing great access to all our
major cities in Scotland via easy rail and road links. Perth became a city in 2012 and has since seen
an expansion in housing and investment to the area. There are many affordable opportunities to both
buy and rent properties on the market in Perth and the surrounding towns and villages where our
rotations are based. There is access to excellent local and private schooling for families.
The Westward programme covers a geographical area with outstanding resources for leisure pursuits
and hobbies. Perthshire, known as big tree country, is famous for its easy access to the outdoors with
mountain, forest and river activities in abundance. Perth and Dundee are also known for their culture,
food and art scenes. Easy access to Stirling, Fife and the Trossachs adds further to the historical and
natural sights found in the area.
Often, trainees who complete their GPST programme with the Westward programme opt to settle in
the area long term. Many join local partnerships, enjoying the work life balance that the region offers.
