Caledonian training programme
The Caledonian GP Specialty Training Programme is based mainly in the Highlands and Moray,
consisting of a large range of training practices across a large geographical area. Along with these
more rural practices there are also several urban training practices in Inverness and Elgin giving a
good mix of both rural and urban practices to train in.
The Caledonian Programme is split into the following:
- Caledonian 1 has hospital posts in Raigmore Hospital and other locations in Inverness. The training
practices are based in Inverness and the surrounding area. There is also an option to work in a GP
practice in a more remote, but beautiful location such as Gairloch or Skye. - Caledonian 2 has hospital posts in Dr Gray’s Hospital, Elgin, and training practices in Moray.
- Caledonian 3, 4 and 5 offer the opportunity to spend time in a more remote hospital, in Fort William,
Shetland or the Western Isles, for six to twelve months in GPST1 before moving back to posts around
Inverness in GPST2 and 3. This allows the trainee to experience work in rural general hospitals
without having to spend their whole training in a remote region.
The area the Caledonian Programme covers includes the vibrant cities of Inverness and Elgin yet
with easy access to the outdoor pursuits on offer in the stunning scenery on our doorstep providing
something for everybody and a fantastic work-life balance. Many of the GPSTs on the Programme
enjoy their experience so much they stay working the area afterwards. Why not come and join them?
