Rural Track training programme
Rural track is the smallest of the Scottish training programmes but covers the largest geographical
area. Our extremely popular programme offers excellent generalist training in district general hospitals
and remote training practices. Allowing trainees to experience remote and rural medicine at its best
and to integrate into these vibrant local communities.
There are five locations to choose from. The Scottish Islands of Shetland, Orkney and Lewis.
Caithness in the North of Scotland, or the mountainous West Coast of Scotland (Oban, Fort William
and Lochgilphead.) As well as 18 months spent in their host practice trainees spend 18 months in
local hospitals. In Shetland and Lewis the full 3 years are based on Island, Orkney trainees go to
Caithness for a six month psychiatry block. The West Coast trainees spend 12 months in either the
Belford or Lorn Hospitals whichever is closer to their host practice, as well as a six month placement
in Psychiatry in Lochgilphead.
These unique posts are ideal for trainees who want to experience the true generalist experience that
working as a GP in rural Scotland offers.
