Edinburgh & East Lothian training programme

The East Edinburgh & East Lothian programme offers GP training within a mix of rural and capital city
options. Edinburgh has all the vitality of a capital city mixed with café culture with its Internationally
renowned festivals giving it a diverse culturally rich heritage. There is always something happening
in Edinburgh that will be a great distraction from a busy training post and help you unwind with friends.
East Lothian boasts beautiful beaches a rich landscape of historic villages and market towns.
Musselburgh between Edinburgh and East Lothian with its’ beautiful river running through it, is
perfectly positioned to enjoy urban living with easy access to the countryside of East Lothian. The A1
running up through East Lothian to Edinburgh and the local train service provides good transport
connections within this geographical area.

There are 19 GP practices within the East Edinburgh and East Lothian programme. The current
spread of these is 12 practices within East Edinburgh, 2 in Musselburgh and 7 within East Lothian. A
number of practices within the programme share buildings, making for the opportunity to easily share
experiences and learning with other GP trainees in neighbouring practices. Trainees are likely to have
at least one post in either the Royal Infirmary or the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. If doing
Medicine of the Elderly, it may be that you are posted within the Community Hospital of Roodlands in
East Lothian. The Borders Hospital is a District General which some trainees attend for posts and
enjoy working with a more rural based demographic. There is therefore a helpful diverse option of
secondary care environments in which to work and train within East Edinburgh and East Lothian. A
close supportive community of GP educators are committed to giving you high quality GP training
