West Lothian training programme
The West Lothian programme covers an area from Southwest Edinburgh as far west as Bathgate and
Linlithgow with some Edinburgh practices such as Colinton, Craiglockhart, and Firrhill. We have a
variety of urban and semiurban practices, all of which vary in affluency and practice populations
across the region.
Our main hospitals are St Johns in Livingston with some rotations including Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy
and Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline in Fife. St Johns is our local hospital in West Lothian with
Specialist Burns / Plastics and ENT units. The Primary / Secondary care interface is a very mutually
supportive working environment.
Out of hours work is based at a variety of sites across Lothian.
We have excellent rail links across the central belt including Linlithgow and Glasgow, as well as direct
access to St Johns and Kirkcaldy from central Edinburgh.
Edinburgh is our capital, rich in history, landmarks, and quintessential Scottish culture and is also
home to several world-renowned festivals including the Famous International Festival and- of course-
The Edinburgh Fringe.
The neighbouring Pentland Hills offer an opportunity to explore the wonderful Scottish scenery
through walking and cycling, and the spectacular Highlands of northern Scotland are only a few hours
away.
Many of our trainees go on to settle in Lothian after their training and many previous trainees now
work as salaried doctors and partners in local practices.
