Ayrshire & Arran training programme

Ayrshire and Arran have a wide range of training practices varying from urban to rural and often
practices serve mixed demographic populations which provides much variety to the working day. The
hospital posts are mostly at the University Hospital Crosshouse, or The Ayr Hospital, with posts also
available at Woodlands View and the Ayrshire Hospice. There has also been a new post this year
working in Sexual health which is based at The Gatehouse. The out of hours GP work is ran by AUCS
which is incredibly well organised and always supervised by experienced out of hours GP’s, many of
which are also GP trainers.

Ayrshire is a wonderful place to work/live. It is easily commutable from Glasgow, most practices
being within a 30-50 minute drive from central Glasgow. There is a true feeling of community within
both primary and secondary care and your experience working in a district general hospital is an
excellent opportunity to encounter a wide range of clinical presentations. Accommodation is generally
more affordable than in the larger cities and there is a wide range of sporting and leisure opportunities.

The GP teaching programme in Ayrshire is highly regarded and has been complemented by its
trainees over the years as being more robust when compared with peers working in other areas. We
also host a 2-day event twice a year event for ST3’s and their trainers which has huge educational
and networking benefits.

Around half of the practices in Ayrshire are training practices which reflects the quality of the practices
in the area. Many trainees, once completing their training programme choose to continue to work in
local practices and there are several recently CCT’d GP’s who are now trainers themselves within
Ayrshire.
