Glasgow North-East training programme
The Glasgow Northeast GPST programme is based in the City of Glasgow but also covers some
hospitals in Lanarkshire to enable exposure to a wide range of specialties. Glasgow has benefitted
from lots of new infrastructure in the East End, such as new housing, transport links and sporting
venues constructed for the 2014 Commonwealth Games like the Velodrome and the re-developed
Olympic sized swimming pool at Tollcross. Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and has plenty of
opportunities for social activities. The city has an abundance of shopping locations, restaurants,
theatres and music venues, including the OVO Hydro arena, one of the busiest music venues in the
world. There is also easy access for outdoor activities, including Loch Lomond which is around one
hour away from the city. Glasgow is well connected on the motorway network and with fast and
frequent train services to Edinburgh, other Scottish cities and south to England. Its international airport
provides easy connections to worldwide locations via London, Amsterdam or Dubai, as well as direct
flights to various European and other holiday destinations. The city has a range of school (including
private), college and universities options.
The training programme offers a wide range of experience in some of Glasgow’s major teaching
hospitals. Posts will mainly be in the Northeast Glasgow hospitals such as the iconic Glasgow Royal
Infirmary, Stobhill and Princess Royal Maternity hospital. However, there will also be the opportunity
in some of the rotations to work in District General hospitals such as University Hospital Hairmyres
and University Hospital Monklands and sexual health clinics.
There are a wide range of GP practices in the scheme ranging from inner city deprived areas to semi-
rural and affluent areas, all with a wealth of experienced and supportive trainers. The GP component
of the programme is based in practices that provide a high quality broad-based multidisciplinary
approach to training. The GMC trainee survey gave a 97% satisfaction rating for the GP practices.
The combined training provided by hospital and GP posts, in conjunction with the Deanery based day
release programmes which are run throughout the three years, are designed to cover the whole of
the GP curriculum so that the trainee is well prepared for the various components of the MRCGP
exam. Both North and East district trainers provide excellent preparation for the CSA exam in final
year.
The programme offers a good mix of patients, easy access to Glasgow facilities and focused training,
and many trainees choose to remain and work in the area after qualifying.
