Glasgow North-West training programme

Glasgow North-West is a popular programme centred around the lively west-end of Glasgow close to
the University and major teaching hospitals. The west-end is a great place to live with a wealth of
cultural and recreational facilities on the doorstep with excellent restaurants, theatres, cinemas,
museums and shopping. Most commutes to work are short and there is easy access to the
countryside surrounding Glasgow, such as Loch Lomond National Park.

There are a wide range of training practices varying from urban to rural and often practices serve
mixed demographic populations which provides much variety to the working day. The hospital posts
are mostly at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, or Glasgow Royal Infirmary, with posts also
available at local hospices, sexual health clinic and new for this year Occupational Health. The out of
hours GP work is ran by GEMs which is well organised and supervised by experienced out of hours
GP’s.

The GP teaching programme in Glasgow North-West is highly regarded and demand for this
programme is great. Alongside practice teaching, trainees attend a half day release programme
fortnightly with their peers which enhances their educational opportunities and provides valuable peer
support. Many trainees on completion of the programme continue to work and live in the area for all
the benefits and diversity it has to offer.
