Glasgow South training programme

GP practices within the Glasgow South Speciality Training programme are all situated in the southside
of Glasgow and span all this area from Kinning Park to Newton Mearns. All practices have a multi-
professional team approach to primary care and all team members are involved in supporting and
teaching their trainees. Our practices cover populations living within many different deciles of the
Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation.

Most of our hospital posts are based in The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. This is a 1,677-bed
acute hospital which opened in April 2015 on the site of the former Southern General Hospital in
Govan, Glasgow. The hospital comprises a 1,109-bed adult hospital, a 256-bed children's hospital
and two major Emergency Departments: one for adults and one for children. There is also an
Immediate Assessment Unit for local GPs and out-of-hours services, to send patients directly. The
retained buildings from the former Southern General Hospital include the Maternity Unit, the Institute
of Neurological Sciences, the Langlands Unit for medicine of the elderly and the laboratory. The
hospital is one of the largest acute hospital campuses in Europe. Further teaching hospitals include
University Hospital Wishaw, West Glasgow Ambulatory Care Hospital, New Victoria Hospital and
Leverndale Hospital.

Glasgow South is a well situated training programme allowing easy city access to Glasgow city centre,
the most populous city in Scotland, which has superb shopping, culture and leisure opportunities.
Glasgow South is also only a short distance from easy access to countryside towards Ayrshire and
Arran and Loch Lomond National Park. All this ideal for ensuring a good work-life balance.
