Lanarkshire training programme
GP practices within the Lanarkshire GP Speciality Training programme are located across the Central
Belt of Scotland between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Practices are situated as as far west as East
Kilbride and Hamilton and cover areas within both North and South Lanarkshire, extending as far east
as Biggar and north towards Kilsyth also. There are a variety of small and larger practices based
throughout the region with a mixture of urban/rural exposure, as well as a variance of affluence within
the patient populations. Types of Practices include purpose-built Practices within multi-centre NHS
buildings, and also privately owned Surgeries.
Our 3 main Hospitals are Hairmyres Hospital, Wishaw General Hospital (including Paediatric Wards,
and also Maternity Units), and Monklands District General Hospital. Each site is committed to hosting
GP Trainees throughout Hospital placements. Some of these Hospital rotations also now include
communtiy attachments, invaluable for GP Training – including Hospital at Home (for Care of the
Elderly); Sexual Health; and also Community Paediatrics within some of our Paeditric rotations. Out
of Hours GP is situated in Douglas Street in Hamilton, where GPSTs can experience elements of
triage, patient reviews and home visits as part of their out of hours requirements.
The Lanarkshire programme offers high-quality GP training in an expanding team of fully accredited
Training Practices. It is a welcoming and open environment, thriving on the provision of GPST training,
with a high level of retention of Trainees remaining within Lanarkshire after training too.
Lanarkshire also provides access not only to urban towns, but also beautiful rural spots and scenic
attractions centrally and towards areas such as New Lanark, with sites and towns of both cultural and
historical significance to Central Scotland. It is also ideally located for easy access both to Glasgow
and also towards Edinburgh given it’s central location. Many of our GPSTs recount a valued,
supportive, and enjoyable time training with us.
