The East Deanery covers the geographical areas of Angus, Dundee and Perth & Kinross. Placements are within NHS Tayside.

Higher training in General Adult Psychiatry (ST4-6) takes place over 3 years in order to reach CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training).

During their three years, trainees will normally undertake placements lasting for one year although under certain circumstances placements can be for a shorter period of time. It would be expected that trainees would work in different geographical areas including both urban, and rural settings. This allows trainees to gain as wide an experience of general adult psychiatry as possible. All trainees contribute to out of hours medical cover, providing experience in the use of the Mental Health Act and in supervising junior trainees.

The majority of placements include core experience; this includes inpatient, outpatient and community-based work.  

There are a number of more specialised placements available within the scheme, including; Liaison Psychiatry, Addictions, Rehabilitation Psychiatry and Advanced Intervention Service (This is a National Service for the assessment and treatment of severe and chronic Treatment Resistant Depression and OCD). Trainees can choose to undertake a year in Liaison, Rehabilitation or Addiction Psychiatry and gain the relevant Endorsement from the Royal College of Psychiatrists in that sub-specialty. Experience in other specialties can be arranged within other regions of the Scottish Deanery.

In addition, trainees will be expected to undertake research and audit projects and become involved in teaching, at undergraduate level at the University of Dundee, and with graduate medical students from St Andrews University,  and also postgraduate teaching for core trainees. Weekly teaching sessions are run for trainees, including journal club presentations, Case Presentations and CASC practice.

With the approval of the Educational Supervisor / TPD, special interest sessions can also be arranged to provide additional clinical experience. These can include forensic, liaison, eating disorder, psychotherapies, perinatal psychiatry and other treatment modalities.

Research, audit, teaching and management opportunities

The Tayside rotation has for many years enjoyed a very positive reputation. There is a strong commitment to training, consultants and trainees play an active part in the development of the Scheme. Physical resources are generally excellent with a well-resourced library and postgraduate centre based at Carseview in Dundee.

There is a good range of subspecialty experience on offer and excellent opportunities to be involved in research through links with the University of Dundee Department of Psychiatry. There is an excellent range of learning opportunities and particularly well-organised psychotherapy supervision.

Tayside itself is a much sought after location with a good quality of lifestyle. There are many beautiful rural locations as well as the convenience of Dundee City and Perth. There are excellent transport links to other areas of Scotland.
