The training program is located at Ninewells Hospital & Medical School. Trainees will gain a comprehensive clinical experience in Renal Medicine. This involves the care of adult patients with the full spectrum of renal disease. Rotation involves ward inpatients, hospital–wide referrals including form the medical HDU, CCU and ITU as well as the care of hospital-based maintenance haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients. Outpatient experience also includes the care of new and follow-up patients in clinical general nephrology as well as specialist clinics including transplantation, low clearance, supportive care and the diabetic renal clinics.
Transplant patients following the immediate post-transplant period undergo continued care at Ninewells. Acute transplantation experience is undertaken for the requisite three-month period at one of the regional transplant centres. The unit has active educational and teaching activities with regular pathology and journal club as well as audit and quality meetings. Research opportunities exist and are encouraged. Trainees are given protected time to attend both Renal and General Medical Training activities. Those undertaking dual accreditation in Renal and GIM undergo two years GIM in coordination with Program Director, Department of Medicine and this will usually involve additional experience at Perth Royal Infirmary.
Research, audit, teaching and management opportunities
The East of Scotland Deanery involves Tayside, which is a beautiful area to live and work within. It has varied geography and offers diverse interests for individuals and families, from a thriving city life in Dundee to outdoor activities in Angus, Perthshire and North Fife. It has good road and rail networks to the other areas of Scotland. The quality of life in Tayside is excellent with easy access to beautiful countryside for sport and leisure as well as world-renowned facilities for golf.
Training within the Deanery is trainee focused with attention to individual trainee needs and aspirations. Ninewells is a University teaching hospital with opportunities to become involved in research.
