Otolaryngology ENT

Programme description

GMC Reference: EOS/461

The East of Scotland provides wide-ranging and comprehensive experience in Otolaryngology for Specialist Registrars at all levels of training.

The rotation encompasses four main centres in the East and North of Scotland, Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh & Inverness, three of which are university teaching hospitals, the fourth of which has a major regional teaching commitment to a university.

The 16 registrars on the rotation would expect to work in at least two of the regional centres at some point during their six years of training. Rotational arrangements are made largely at the request of the trainees and also taking into account their training requirements and subspecialty interests.

Extensive experience in Head and Neck Surgery, Otology, Paediatrics and Rhinology would be expected but exposure to facial plastic surgery, skull base surgery and remote and rural practice are also significant parts of the rotation.

There are monthly regional educational and training days which cover Head and Neck, Rhinology, Otology Facial Plastics, Paediatrics and Professional Skills and Behaviour. There are also regular locally run temporal bone study days, FESS training days, Facial plastics and rhinoplasty days, which are subsidised by a local endowment fund.  Trainees are expected to take an active part in research, publication and audit.

There is a twice yearly meeting of the regional training committee and annual formal assessment of the trainees via a formal presentation and interview.

Research - There are excellent facilities for clinical research and audit in each of the centres and a good track record of publications.
