The 2 acute hospitals in Glasgow, the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) and Glasgow Royal Infirmary house dermatology units with dermatology beds located at the QEUH.  Large dermatology outpatient units are also located within ambulatory care hospitals, West ACH, Stobhill ACH, and the Victoria ACH.   District General Hospitals included in the program are Monklands University Hospital, University Hospital Hairmyres in  NHS Lanarkshire, the Royal Alexandra Hospital and Inverclyde Royal Hospital in NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, and University Hospital Crosshouse in NHS Ayrshire & Arran.

In addition to providing excellent general dermatology training, the scheme offers teaching in several specialist areas (genetics, lymphoma, connective tissue disease, contact dermatitis investigation,  hair disorders, epidermolysis bullosa, photobiology, paediatric dermatology and severe psoriasis) as well as Mohs' surgery.  There are close links with the University of Glasgow allowing exposure to teaching and research.

Outwith the standard timetable, trainees are given extra free study sessions for which they can pursue subspecialty curriculum requirements, e.g. plastic surgery, laser, oncology and infectious diseases.

Most trainees are offered a DGH placement for their first year with substantial general clinic experience.  After the first year, trainees will be placed in a central hospital.  This ensures that the trainee is exposed to a significant range of subspecialty opportunities as well as experience of the acute dermatology generated by large tertiary referral inpatient facilities. Trainees will rotate between hospitals based in Glasgow and will also spend one year of training attached to a local district general teaching hospital.

The consultants and trainers in Dermatology in the West of Scotland are enthusiastic for trainees to pursue their own interests and will allow flexibility in timetables to suit.  Choice of hospital in the rotation is normally arranged on a yearly basis, but follows a predetermined plan.

There is great flexibility for trainees and we try to facilitate trainees to attend a variety of learning opportunities outwith the timetable.  Within the West of Scotland there  is a well established trainee teaching program with contributions from local consultants and the opportunity to be involved in weekly Dermatology CME.

The West of Scotland scheme offers a broad based dermatology training along with the opportunity to cover the more specialized areas of the curriculum.  The departments involved in providing training are busy but allow great experience in a friendly and supportive environment.

Research, audit, teaching and management opportunities

A number of consultants working in Dermatology in the West of Scotland have active research interests including genodermatoses; hair disease and severe psoriasis.  We encourage trainees to engage with research whenever possible.  Many of our trainees in the past have been recipients of the UKDCTN fellowship allowing them to further broaden their research experience which is something we encourage. 

Teaching forms a mandatory part of dermatology training and is something our trainees are actively involved in.  We run regular educational afternoons for 4th year students which trainees help to co-ordinate and also encourage our doctors to lead case based learning sessions.  Opportunities for postgraduate lecturing are also available.
