The West of Scotland has a unique blend of training departments combining busy urban locations with departments with substantial rural catchment areas. Rotations are organized by the Training Programme Director to give the trainee exposure to different types of department.

All trainees are encouraged to undertake audit and most departments are involved in research work as part of multi-centre trials. All departments have local teaching programmes for trainees.

In the West of Scotland, trainees can expect a young cohort of Trainers and Supervisors, who are clinically involved and focused on high quality training. Many are recently appointed and well placed to offer help and support with exam preparation.

In the summer of 2015 a new hospital will open on the present Southern General site in Glasgow. This is likely to become the largest Emergency Department in Scotland and will be the regional trauma centre for the West. In addition a new tertiary referral Paediatric hospital (replacing the Royal Hospital for Sick Children) will also open on this site.

Higher Trainees may have the opportunity to undertake out of programme episodes such as paediatric subspecialty training or attachment to the Emergency Medicine Retrieval service.

Research, audit, teaching and management opportunities

In your three years of Higher specialty training you will rotate through three departments offering a mix of learning environments. There is a monthly regional teaching programme which aims to cover the curriculum and ensure success in the FCEM exit examination. In your training you will acquire the knowledge, skills and experience to take on the role of a specialist in Emergency Medicine. In addition you will be encouraged to take an increasing leadership role in the departments under the close supervision of Consultant colleagues.
