Gastro-enterology
Programme description
GMC Reference: WOS/416
“Gastroenterology and Hepatology” training in the West of Scotland offers a well supported programme in which trainees rotate through the hospitals gaining competences in Gastroenterology/ Hepatology and General (Internal) Medicine.
Each trainee will spend time in the large teaching hospitals (Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital) as well as District General Hospitals which are well resourced in Gastroenterology. They will have individual supervision in each post. Courses for upper GI Endoscopy and Colonoscopy are mandatory and funded centrally, allowing the trainee’s study leave to be used on other experience.
During the initial 2 years of specialty training, trainees will gain a broad experience of gastroenterology, hepatology and training in diagnostic upper GI endoscopy. In the later years of the programme most trainees will progress to complete the complex luminal pathway and gain accreditation in colonoscopy. All trainees will gain experience in therapeutic endoscopy. In addition there will be opportunities to apply for programmed experience in sub-specialty areas with specialty years in IBD and advanced endoscopy available locally. Application to complex hepatology training will be available for around 20% of our large cohort of trainees. This will provide training to level 3 standards including time spent at the Scottish Liver Transplant Unit in Edinburgh.
There are regular training days held in many of the units and there is a regional (Scotland wide) programme of training days in both gastroenterology and general medicine. There are, in addition opportunities to attend (and present at) the Scottish Society for Gastroenterology Trainees days and bi-annual meetings.
Research, audit, teaching and management opportunities
All trainees are encouraged to undertake audit projects at all sites and there are meetings on some sites to present such projects. Teaching is encouraged and there are opportunities to take part in management. We are very supportive of trainees who wish to take time out of programme to undertake a period of research.
