Programme description

The West of Scotland Renal Medicine Training Programme comprises a series of 6-12 month placements moving between the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, University Hospital Monklands, DGH and University Hospital Crosshouse plus several other West of Scotland hospitals for General (Internal) Medicine training and it is expected that all trainees will accredit in both Renal and General (Internal) Medicine.

Renal Medicine services in the West of Scotland are delivered by four renal units (Glasgow, Monklands, Crosshouse and Dumfries) with an additional six dialysis units for a population of 2.7 million.  Acute renal transplantation is undertaken at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital with long term follow up of renal transplant patients at the other hospitals.

The Renal Medicine Programme offers:

  • comprehensive supervised training in all aspects of Renal Medicine.
  • full range of Renal in-patient services with strong interdisciplinary focus in ward and high dependency settings.
  • extensive general and specialist out-patient services with opportunities for trainees to gain experience of general nephrology, low clearance, transplant follow up, conservative management, transplant assessment, live donor assessment, diabetes and maternal medicine clinics at various hospitals.
  • experience of all hospital and home based methods of dialysis including home haemodialysis, haemodiafiltration and peritoneal dialysis.
  • training in native and transplant biopsies and line insertion.
  • secondment to ITU or other specialist units.
  • close links with Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Department and local Apheresis Team.
  • protected time for ST teaching in Renal and General (Internal) Medicine.
  • Renal ST training days every 2 - 3 months to cover curricular topics.
  • full use of dedicated Renal IT system (SERPR).
  • access to a range of CME activities - monthly unit CME, CPC's, morbidity and mortality meetings, weekly transplant journal club, West of Scotland Renal meeting 3 times per annum, registrar evenings at Scottish Renal Association twice per year.
  • support to study for Nephrology SCE.

Research, audit, teaching and management opportunities

With strong links to the University of Glasgow and the British Heart Foundation Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre, trainees can have the opportunity to undertake clinical and laboratory research with a high proportion of trainees working towards higher degrees by taking time Out of Programme.

  • involvement in audit at local and possibly national level through the Renal Registries
  • research opportunities within unit and through links with University of Glasgow
  • involvement in undergradute and postgraduate teaching with appropriate training
  • training in management through on-line courses and attendance as senior trainee at unit management meetings
