Respiratory Medicine presents a broad range of career opportunities many of which involve a mixture of clinical activities and practical procedures. The West of Scotland Training Programme allows access to clinical units with a very high prevalence of respiratory disease and exposure to a number of regional and national sub specialist units including the West of Scotland Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre and the Scottish National Pulmonary Vascular Unit.

Trainees will all rotate through a variety of sites which will allow them access to all core disciplines and subspecialties within Respiratory Medicine. Trainees are able to express preferences for their training and these are accommodated whenever possible.

Trainees are encouraged to discus research and audit programmes with their trainers, the Programme Director and research units at any stage during their training.  The trainees can also approach their trainesr for educational and personal support, career advice and counseling.

The wide range of specialty and subspecialty opportunities within the West of Scotland Deanery provide one of the most attractive situations for Respiratory training in the UK.

Research, audit, teaching and management opportunities

There are numerous areas of Respiratory Medicine research interest within the West of Scotland and the programme rotates through academic with strong links to the University of Glasgow. Trainees are encouraged to become involved in local research programmes and are expected to take part in audit during their training which is facilitated in each of the hospital sites.

Placements typically last for one year and trainees will often commence training in a District General Hospital.  Later years will include a year each in the two large Glasgow teaching hospitals.

The Scottish National Respiratory Training programme offers a series of one day training events with teaching provided by both local and National speakers.  In addition to covering the core curriculum there are opportunities for practical skills development such as thoracic ultrasound and progressive exercise testing.  Trainees are encouraged to seek appropriate Out of Programme learning experiences including higher degrees and e-learning programmes.

The West of Scotland was a world centre for the production of steel, shipbuilding and coal mining which has had the unfortunate side effect of creating whole generations with severe respiratory diseases.  This has contributed to the presence today of a wide range of specialty and subspecialty opportunities within the West of Scotland Deanery, providing one of the most stimulating environments for Respiratory Medicine training in the UK.
