South East Scotland offers excellent training opportunities in general radiology and many subspecialty disciplines. The scheme is based in Edinburgh with opportunities to rotate through radiology departments in Fife, Borders and Forth Valley hospitals.

The 1st of the 5 years is spent acquiring the basic skills of plain film interpretation, ultrasound, screening procedures and physics and anatomy teaching. Time is divided between the teaching hospitals at RIE ("The Royal") and WGH ("The Western") with dedicated time for physics and anatomy teaching and a day a week spent at a DGH.

The 2nd and 3rd years are spent in core-training blocks that are 4 months long. These include Chest & IR, Breast imaging & Oncology, MSK & nuclear medicine, neuroradiology, paediatric radiology and a block in a DGH. The trainees also start Oncall during this time. Throughout these years, there is an opportunity to consolidate cross-sectional imaging skills in CT and MRI.

The 4th and 5th year attachments are chosen by the trainee to develop a subspecialty interest. There is the option to take a four month dedicated research block without delaying CCT.

Within the South East we have an active teaching program aimed at the FRCR exam. We also encourage participation in research and audit. The training program is co-ordinated through the local training committee, trainee participation is an integral part.

Edinburgh is a very pleasant place to live. Our scheme has an excellent record in Royal College of Radiologists exams and in placing emergent trainees in fellowships or consultant posts in their chosen fields.

There is unified application for the all UK radiology training schemes. There are 4 schemes in Scotland. These are based in the North of Scotland (Aberdeen), West of Scotland (Glasgow), East of Scotland (Dundee) and South East Scotland (Edinburgh). The SE Scotland scheme is the second largest after West of Scotland and has a complement of 35 trainees. All schemes follow the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) curriculum for clinical radiology culminating in obtaining the FRCR examination. More information can be obtained at www.rcr.ac.uk/
