Dermatology is the medical specialty dealing with disorders of the skin in all ages of patients. It is primarily outpatient based, at Lauriston Buildings in central Edinburgh. It is the busiest out-patient specialty, with daily out-patient clinics, day surgery and day treatments.
Nearly 50% of new referrals are suspected skin malignancy, with the remainder consisting of inflammatory dermatoses and genodermatoses. The South-East Scotland department includes a busy phototherapy and day treatment centre and has specialist clinics in the following areas, which trainees rotate through contact dermatitis, eczema, lymphoma, paediatric dermatology, photodermatology, psoriasis, skin cancer, skin surgery and Mohs’ micrographic surgery. One trainee rotation contains weekly one-to-one Histopathology teaching. Trainees have a two-week attachment to the National Photodermatology Unit at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee additional to their study leave. Adult Dermatology in-patients are admitted to the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh.
District General Dermatology is covered through an attachment once a week for 8 months to the stand-alone Fife Dermatology Department and sometimes to out-reach clinics in Lothian DGHs.
The training programme has strong links to other related specialties such as Paediatrics, Plastic Surgery, Genito-Urinary Medicine, Oncology & Radiotherapy, Pathology and Primary Care.
Out of hours on-call for Lothian dermatology is currently provided until 9pm Monday-Thursday and from 9am to 5pm Friday-Sunday and on Public Holidays. This is supported by an on-call consultant dermatologist.
Research, audit, teaching and management opportunities
An active academic department is led by Professor Brown and Professor Weller, with opportunities for trainees to undertake lab-based research. Trainees participate regularly in departmental audits and medical student and other junior doctor teaching. Various management opportunities are also available.
Weekly academic teaching sessions are held in the department and trainees are encouraged to attend the tri-annual Scottish Dermatology Society meetings, annual British Association of Dermatologists’ meeting, as well as the pan-Scotland registrar training events. Presentations at these events are actively encouraged.
