Internal Medicine Training (IMT)

Programme description

GMC Reference: SES4075

The South East Scotland IMT programme is based upon the previous regional CMT programme, which was ranked top in the UK for overall trainee satisfaction (GMC National Training Survey 2016 and 2017) as well as having the highest MRCP pass rates by completion of CT2.

During IMT stage 1, A broad foundation of experience is provided in both central and peripheral hospitals across the region, upon which any future career in medicine can be based. Each rotation is aimed at satisfying the requirements of the new IM phase 1 curriculum and will include experience in Acute Medicine with unselected medical take, Medicine for the Elderly, Critical Care and many medical specialties. IMT year 3 is split into 6 months speciality / 6 months AIM, with contribution to the acute unselected take throughout. During IMY3, trainees are based in 1 site with the majority of posts within one of the three peripheral hospitals (VHK, SJH and BGH).

Our posts are designed to facilitate trainees meeting the IMT curricular requirements with a range of learning opportunities over the 3 years including outpatient clinics and a 4 month critical care block, during which trainees will undertake training in palliative care. There is a high success rate for entry in to HST on completion of the programme. Formal teaching is delivered by the National IMT Stage 1 Teaching Programme, and SIM via the highly successful Bootcamp, Skills Day and Registrar Ready course which is built into the IMT programme. Other opportunities for SIM / procedural training are encouraged via the Mastery Programme, site based SIM training and TACTICs. Trainees are also encouraged to attend relevant RCPE Symposia, Evening Medical Updates and local clinical teaching and in their second year CPD focused on their proposed career choice.

Preferences will be automatically allocated taking into account trainee selections and recruitment performance. These rotations are indicative and whilst we hope to adhere to these as closely as possible they may be subject to minor changes if our trainee numbers fluctuate in order to ensure safe staffing and continuity of training in affected departments.

Research, audit, teaching and management opportunities

Although there are currently no formal academic IMT posts in SES, all trainees will be required to complete a QIP annually and most will rotate through academic specialist units where they can participate in research projects of their choice. Edinburgh has a high rating for medical research with many exciting opportunities. Training in teaching methods is also encouraged through the South East Faculty of Clinical Educators which can lead to formal qualification.
