Specialty Information
The South East of Scotland Ophthalmology program is a 7 year run through training offering experience in all aspects of Ophthalmology as defined in the Royal College of Ophthalmologists curriculum www.rcophth.ac.uk. The program is located at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion in Edinburgh and trainees cover all hospitals in Edinburgh. There are rotations to St Johns Hospital, West Lothian and to Dunfermline & Kirkcaldy Hospitals in Fife.
There are 12 ST posts and most placements are of a 6 month duration. There are excellent facilities for surgery including a wet lab. After the early years of Ophthalmology trainees will have a more specialty orientated training. The more senior trainees are expected to develop subspecialty interest which can be offered in South East Scotland but trainees are also encouraged to gain experience at other centres of excellence in the UK & overseas.
All trainees are expected to participate in audit & research and there is a dedicated postgraduate teaching session.
Training is closely supervised by a program director and clinical tutors.
