Paediatrics

Programme description

GMC Reference: SES/489

All trainees will start their training in South East Scotland spending ST1 and ST2 in placements at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh and Simpsons Maternity Services at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh during which time their training will focus on developing core skills in general paediatrics and neonatology.

The middle years (ST3-5) consolidate general paediatric and neonatal training and offer experience in Community Child Health and Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine.

Some South East Scotland trainees will spend 12 months in placements in Forth Valley and/or Tayside.  These attachments, anticipated to take place during ST3/4, will offer placements in Community Child Health and General Paediatrics with attachments to supervised sub-specialty clinics. The number of any South East Scotland posts will be equivalent to the number of new posts at ST1/2 in the East Deanery.

Most South East Scotland trainees will remain in South East Scotland throughout the Training Programme and will not necessarily have the opportunity to rotate to Forth Valley and/or Tayside.

The final years of training (ST6-8) provide the opportunity to develop sub-specialty interests within General Paediatrics and/or Community Child Health within the Training Programme or to pursue sub-specialty Grid training.  Every effort is made to tailor Level 3 training to the individuals’ interests.

Sub-specialty grid training within  South East Scotland is currently available in the following specialties: Neonatal Medicine, Oncology, GI/Hepatology/Nutrition, Respiratory Medicine, Neurology, Neurodisability, Endocrine & Diabetes, Community Child Health.

Research, audit, teaching and management opportunities

There are close links to the University of Edinburgh and the programme has for many years successfully supported training in Clinical Lecturer posts.  The South East Scotland Programme has a long track record of supporting trainees in taking time out-of-programme to pursue higher degrees with a high proportion of South East Scotland trainees successfully completing such degrees when compared with the national average of paediatric trainees.

Additionally, we have been supportive of trainees seeking time out-of-programme for experience e.g. overseas where it can be demonstrated that such experience is valuable for the long-term career path and such experience is not available within the South East Scotland Training Programme.

There is a regionally delivered curriculum-matched training programme for SE Scotland paediatric trainees which is based at RHSC Edinburgh with video-links to other regional training sites. The SE Scotland Deanery has been involved in the national SCOPE 1 (Level 1 teaching) and SCOPE 2 (Level 2 teaching) programmes. The latter includes training modules in most of the domains for Level 2 Training as outlined in the RCPCH curriculum. Trainees can gain a Certificate in Child Health after one year and they can go on to study for a Diploma in Child Health.
