The Respiratory training programme in South East Scotland offers excellent training in Respiratory Medicine including experience in all major subspecialties. Respiratory Medicine training currently occurs in the Western General Hospital, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, St Johns Hospital and the Borders.
Specialty Information
The major subspecialties include: lung cancer; asthma; COPD; bronchiectasis; cystic fibrosis; pulmonary physiology; interstitial lung diseases; tuberculosis; community acquired pneumonia; hospital and ventilator associated pneumonia; interventional bronchoscopy; sleep medicine; critical care. The cardiothoracic regional Unit is based at the RIE campus.
The Medical School is based on the Royal Infirmary (RIE) campus. Trainees are actively involved with medical student training and examinations. There is active basic scientific, clinical and translational research in all the subspecialties.
The Respiratory Medicine Training Programme in the South East Scotland provides training in all aspects of Respiratory Medicine and offers the possibility of sub-specialisation. The training programme follows the curriculum in Respiratory Medicine developed by the SAC in Respiratory Medicine approved by GMC.
The training takes place in the attached hospitals. It is intended in years 1 and 4/5 that attachments will allow the GIM accreditation to be fulfilled. The other years there will be attachments at RIE and WGH going through the various subspecialties. A formal research attachment to complete an MD or PhD will be encouraged.
Training will be multifaceted. There will be a formal Educational Supervisor that will discuss your training needs. There will be formal assessments as per GMC. There is currently going to be national training days for all trainees within Scotland to attend. In addition there will be encouraged to attend both the Scottish and British Thoracic Society Meetings. In addition to this, there are numerous other educational opportunities including lunchtime meetings, Xray meetings, grand rounds and a key SE Scotland meeting discussing fascinating cases throughout the region.
