| Main Duties of Placement | Updating ward patient list. Attending 8am and 4pm registrar lead ward rounds. There is a registrar covering the ward each week so you need to know the patients well. The ward is a vascular ward with a reasonable turnover of patients and a lot of discharge letters to be completed. Also responsible for organising investigations and chasing up their results. Management of acutely unwell patients on the ward. Admission of elective patients (mainly vascular) and transfer of acute vascular problems from ASRU. Practical procedures e.g IV cannulation, NG tubes etc. |
| Typical Work Pattern | Most weeks are 8am-5pm shifts although you usually have to come in a little early to update the list before the ward round. There is a handover from H@N. Most people do two on call weekends in their 4 month block covering 2 wards, often wards 7 & 8 (the ASRU). 1-2 7 night sets of night shifts covering the surgical floor. 1-2 weeks covering ward 7 the acute surgical receiving ward instead of the Vascular ward. |
| Learning Opportunities | Many of the registrars are keen to do informal teaching on the ward. They occasionally provide opportunities to gain experience in practical procedures and often provide you with constructive feedback on your day to day work. In addition there is a Radiology MDT and audit meeting on a Wednesday afternoon which the F1s are encouraged to attend. |
