| Main Duties of Placement | This is based in the Acute Medical Initial Assessment Ward (AMIA) and the Short Stay Medical Unit (SSMU) in the Emergency Care Centre, ARI. The post offers excellent opportunities to gain experience in the assessment and management of a wide range of acute medical conditions. |
| Typical Work Pattern | The rota is a full shift pattern, with the majority of daytime shifts being 9 hours long. Night shifts are based only in AMIA. |
| Learning Opportunities | Formal educational opportunities include a weekly M&M meeting and regular teaching sessions for junior doctors. All junior doctors are encouraged to carry out and present audits, and there are frequent opportunities to perform most of the core procedures listed in the FY1 curriculum. |
| Teaching | FY1 doctors are actively encouraged to attend the weekly organised teaching at the Deanery. This takes place every Thursday lunchtime, lasting about one hour. |
| Unique Selling Points | This is a valuable opportunity to encounter a wide variety of clinical presentations, mostly medical but relatively frequently also relevant to other Specialties. In the day time, there is a constant Consultant and Registrar presence in AMIA, giving ready support and feedback, and at night, there is also close support from the Registrars on duty. In recent years, the feedback from GMC and STS surveys has been highly positive, with multiple dark green (very good) flags. |
