Main Duties of Placement

This post is based on the Haematology and Oncology wards – Wards 112 and 114 respectively - and offers excellent opportunities to gain experience in the assessment and management of a wide range of acute haematology and oncology conditions. 

Typical Work Pattern

The rota is a full shift pattern, with the majority of daytime shifts being 9 hours long.

This rota does not undertake night shifts.

Learning Opportunities

Formal educational opportunities include a monthly clinical governance meeting and regular teaching sessions for junior doctors.

All junior doctors are encouraged to carry out and present audits, and there are frequent opportunities to perform most of the core procedures listed in the F1 curriculum.

Teaching

Teaching opportunities include regular foundation programme teaching, as well as oncology and haematology specific teaching.

There are departmental education meetings held on a Monday, which junior doctors are welcome to attend and have the opportunity to present audits or interesting cases.

Furthermore, the senior medical staff provide clinical teaching opportunities on ward rounds and assist with work based assessments for all junior doctors. 

Unique Selling Points

This is a valuable opportunity to encounter a wide variety of haematology and oncology presentations.

In the day time, there is a Registrar presence on the ward and access to Consultant support.
