Main Duties of Placement | The post in general surgery offers excellent experience in the care of elective and emergency surgical patients. This is a tertiary referral centre for General Surgery within a large teaching hospital. The elective workload involves the broad spectrum of general surgery, gastrointestinal oncological surgery, benign colorectal and bariatric surgery. There is a high volume of laparoscopic surgery with an enhanced recovery programme in place. There is exposure to critically ill patients in the two surgical high dependency units. Main duties include ward care pre- and post-operative, emergency patient care, attending MDT and morbidity and mortality meetings and student supervision. |

Learning Opportunities | Weekly MDT and morbidity & mortality meetings. Journal club. Foundation year 1 teaching programme. |
Teaching | Weekly FY teaching programme. |
Unique Selling Points | Busy unit with good teamwork and exposure to complete range of major general surgical care. High level of support from ward clerks, physician assistants and phlebotomists, therefore enhancing learning opportunities to manage patients under guidance from senior medical staff. |
