Main Duties of Placement | Ward-based duties relating to the care of inpatients in a 26-bedded speciality Infectious Diseases ward. |
Typical Work Pattern | The department is staffed by four FY1s who are supervised by one CMT, three FY2s and two registrars. There are five consultants who work in the Infection Unit. The Foundation rota includes out-of-hours cross cover with the other departments in the Emergency care centre and Hospital at Night. |
Learning Opportunities | The F1 post in the infection unit provides the trainee with an opportunity to gain experience in a diverse range of infectious diseases including community-acquired and healthcare-associated infections, tropical diseases and HIV disease. |
Teaching | The department has an active postgraduate teaching programme including lectures, X-Ray meetings and journal clubs in which the FY1 is encouraged to participate. There are extensive opportunities for departmental audit/quality improvement and teaching of undergraduate students. 1 hr mandatory teaching programme per week for FY1 trainees. |
