Placement Vascular Surgery

Main Duties of Placement

This post offers the unique exposure to Vascular Surgery in this Tertiary unit.

The post holder will be responsible for ward rounds, admission, investigation and management of all emergency and elective Vascular and Breast surgical patients giving exposure to a wide variety of cases from both specialties.

Though the post is mainly ward-based, when staffing allows doctors are encouraged to attend theatre sessions on an elective and emergency basis for educational purposes.

During the Breast Placement, if there is enough ward cover, the post holder will be encouraged to attend the one stop breast clinics for educational purposes.

Typical Work Pattern

Full shift pattern where the post holder will rotate on 4 weekly basis. This involves covering Vascular (alone) for ¾ of the attachment, and Breast Surgery (alone) for ¼ of the attachment. There is no cross cover, so when on the Breast week they will cover only the breast ward, and this is the same when on vascular.

Learning Opportunities

Formal (protected) weekly FY1 teaching, ward-based teaching, MDT twice weekly during Vascular attachment, and weekly during Breast surgery attachment, Innovation laboratory teaching, weekly Journal club associated with General Surgery.

Direct working with Consultants, hands-on teaching with exposure to complicated and interesting group of complex patients with multiple pathologies. Enthusiastic group of Consultants with strong focus on teaching and enhancing Academic profile.

The Breast unit runs a Bi-Monthly educational meeting. Trainees interested in a further career in surgery are encouraged to undertake either an audit or a project aiming for presentation/publication. The Breast Unit has excellent Academic Profile, especially that the Dean of the Medical School is one of the Consultants in the Unit.
