Main Duties of Placement | The Gilbert Bain Hospital is a rural general hospital, serving a population of 22,000. The FY1 is one six juniors. The main duty of the FY1 is to provide continuity on the medical ward. |
Typical Work Pattern | There is only one FY1 post in medicine. The post-holder works eight hours a day Monday to Friday on the medical ward. |
Learning Opportunities | There is a weekly teaching programme. Once per month there is an opportunity to link into the Royal College of Edinburgh evening teaching sessions. There is a monthly education meeting held with primary and secondary care. There are two formal teaching ward rounds held each week. |
Teaching | Video conferencing for deanery teaching is provided. Other in-house teaching opportunities include resuscitation training. There is an opportunity to attend monthly teaching governance sessions as well as attend business based ward governance meetings. This allows the trainee an insight into the issues of managing a ward. |
Unique Selling Points | The post holder has a close working relationship with the consultant staff. They have the opportunity to see a wide range of clinical conditions ranging from acute admissions to elective admissions. They also see and clerk in day cases. |
