| Main Duties of Placement | The post in general and upper GI surgery offers excellent and broad experience in the care of elective and emergency surgical patients in a large teaching hospital. The elective work load involves the broad spectrum of general surgery such as hernia and gallbladder surgery in addition to oncological surgery for colon, oesophageal and gastric malignancies and bariatric surgery. This unit also acts as a tertiary referral centre for complex upper GI cases in the North East of Scotland including the Orkney and Shetland islands. |
| Typical Work Pattern | This is a full shift rota with cross cover of the vascular and breast units. |
| Learning Opportunities | There will be ample learning opportunities during this post from presenting emergency and elective patients during ward rounds to preparing cases for the weekly upper GI MDT meetings and X-ray conference. FY1s will be encouraged to participate in DATIX reporting and attendance at weekly morbidity and mortality meetings. |
| Teaching | FYs are actively encouraged to attend the weekly teaching programme for foundation doctors run by the Deanery. |
| Unique Selling Points | There is a high level of senior support during this placement providing excellent opportunity to manage acutely unwell patients with guidance from senior medical staff. You will be exposed to surgical HDU and gain knowledge in the use of invasive monitoring and critical care. |
