Placement Palliative Medicine
Year F2

Hospital(s) Roxburghe House, Aberdeen
Main Duties of Placement

Ward-based management of patients in a 21-bedded Specialist Palliative Care unit.

Clinical focus on optimising symptom control in patients with advanced life limiting illnesses and providing high quality terminal care.

Opportunities for exposure to outpatient, day-care, hospital advice team and community settings. 

Particular focus on multi-disciplinary team working and developing communication skills with patients, their families, staff and volunteers.

Typical Work Pattern

On call rota: 1 in 5 (2xFY2, 1xGPST, 2xST), out of hours on-call from home. EWTD compliant.

Clinical supervision from STs, with 24h immediate availability of consultant support.

Learning Opportunities
Teaching

2 x 2hrs per month for FY2 trainees.

Unique Selling Points

Other competencies covered include: history taking, examination and clinical decision making, ethical and legal implications of withholding and withdrawing treatment, DNACPR, breaking bad news, management of common oncological emergencies (hypercalcaemia, spinal cord compression, haemorrhage etc.), paracentesis (possibly pleural drainage), management of opioid related side-effects, self-management (stress, seeking help appropriately).
