Main Duties of Placement | Foundation doctors have the opportunity to attend fracture clinics and outpatient orthopaedic clinics. Foundation doctors may be first assistant in theatre for elective joint replacements. Orthopaedic department perform multi-disciplinary team meetings in advance of ward rounds supported by rehabilitation physicians, orthopaedic surgeon and physiotherapists to provide a holistic care for elderly patients with fracture neck of femur. |
Typical Work Pattern | Foundation doctor works under flexible rota and provides out of hours cover across other specialities. |
Learning Opportunities | Foundation doctors are always encouraged to do clinical audit and participate in local multi-disciplinary meetings for presentation of interesting cases to groups of colleagues; both senior as well as junior, nurses, physiotherapists and other Allied Health Professionals. Western Isles Hospital has excellent postgraduate facilities, including a well-resources library and 24/7 internet facilities for trainees. |
Teaching | The orthopaedic department provides excellent weekly teachings, sometimes on a one-to-one basis, in addition to the multi-disciplinary regular postgraduate meetings on a weekly basis. There is a video link service with Aberdeen and Raigmore for educational purposes and multi-disciplinary meetings. |
Unique Selling Points | Foundation Year 2 trainees work along with the Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in the establishment with no middle grade doctor. This staffing level has privileged Foundation doctors to be first contact in acute trauma cases in the Accident and Emergency Department. Although Foundation doctors have first exposure to patients, they have continuous support and advice of the orthopaedic surgeon. |
