Nutrition: you will be a member of the Multidisciplinary Team providing Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN). The team has ward rounds every Monday and Thursday morning to review and prescribe for patients who are receiving TPN. You will receive referrals for new patients being started on TPN. You will also attend a Home PN clinic once per month on Tuesday afternoons to review patients on long-term Home PN.

Lipid Clinic: you will attend Lipid Clinic on two Tuesday afternoons each month.

Obesity Clinic: you will attend Obesity Clinic on Wednesday afternoons – this mainly involves assessment of patients being considered for bariatric surgery, and follow-up of these patients afterwards. You will also attend the Obesity MDT meeting once per month (Wednesday mornings).

Duty Biochemist: you will be on the Duty Biochemist rota (average 0.5 to 1 day per week) – this involves providing interpretative advice on results of investigations and taking any immediate action required to alert clinicians to grossly abnormal results.

Quality improvement: It is anticipated that you will have the opportunity to carry out a quality improvement project.

Medical student teaching: It is expected that you will have the opportunity to be involved in teaching medical students.

In addition to ongoing learning opportunities in clinics, ward rounds and MDT meetings, the department has a weekly lunchtime Departmental CPD session (usually Thursday lunchtimes). Attendance at the hospital Postgraduate Medical Clinical Meeting on Wednesday lunchtimes is also encouraged.

This placement will give you the opportunity to experience areas of medicine that are not always encountered in Foundation Training, and will enable you to understand the important roles of Chemical Pathology in patient care.
