Placement Haematology

Main Duties of Placement

Foundation Year Two doctors in Haematology will work predominantly on the 22 bedded inpatient haematology unit. They will get a wide ranging exposure to all aspects of clinical haematology including the full spectrum of haematological malignancies, non-leukaemic myeloproliferative diseases and thrombotic and bleeding disorders. They will have responsibility alongside CMT and GPST trainees and under the direct supervision of the ward haematology specialty registrar for the initial assessment and management of patients admitted to the unit. As such they will gain experience in the emergency management of patients with neutropenic sepsis and opportunistic infection, life threatening bleeding and the complications of malignancy such as acute cord compression and other neurological emergencies, mediastinal obstruction, hypercalcaemia and acute renal failure. They will learn how to talk to patients and families of patients diagnosed with haematological malignancy. Potential practical experience will include lumbar punctures (though not the administration of intrathecal chemotherapy), chest drainage, bone marrow aspirate and biopsy and central line insertion. The FY2 doctors contribute to a full shift rota with seven other junior grade doctors. This rota includes contribution to hospital at night and covering late shifts on the Oncology Unit.

The haematology unit has a strong academic record and enjoys close links with the academic department based in Aberdeen University Medical School.

Teaching

Most education is provided at NES: 2 x2hr teaching per month for FY2 trainees.

Informal teaching is provided on the ward and FY trainees are able to attend departmental teaching if available.

FY trainees are encouraged to conduct an audit project.
