Individual Placement Description
Placement Anaesthetics
Year F1
Region North
Hospital(s) Dr Grays Hospital, Elgin
Main Duties of Placement

This four month block is divided into three months HDU and one month operating department experience.

Typical Work Pattern

The only variation from the standard FY1 rota occurs during the theatre attachment. Here the day begins at 08:30 but ends flexibly to allow for two weekends ward work during the month.

Learning Opportunities

Whilst in theatre, trainees work under the direct supervision of one of nine consultant anaesthetists. In HDU senior support will reflect the specialty admitting the patient e.g. medical, surgical or very occasionally obstetrics. There is also middle grade cover from these specialties in addition to anaesthetic support.

Teaching

1hr mandatory teaching programme for FY1.

Unique Selling Points

The principle focus of the learning is proficiency in airway management and resuscitation. Skills are developed in the assessment and management of critically ill patients. This may involve invasive monitoring, interpretation of investigations and work-up for transfer to an intensive care facility. Single organ support e.g. use of inotropes and non-invasive ventilation is undertaken within the unit. Trainees are encouraged to accompany the anaesthetist to the resuscitation rooms in A&E when appropriate. Patient safety, infection control and team working are stressed.

It is important to note that this description is a typical example of your placement and may be subject to change.
