Main Duties of Placement

This post is based in ward 40, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. The FY1s are responsible for the care of Neurology and Neurosurgery patients and their duties are primarily ward-based.

Typical Work Pattern

The ward has a high dependency unit and also contains the Neurophysiology department. There are 3 consultants in Neurosurgery, 5 consultants in Neurology and 1 consultant in Neurophysiology. The post offers experience in the neurosciences in general, including the care of the unconscious patient, airway care, the care of spinal injuries and experience of operative surgery. You will become familiar with the interpretation of imaging of the nervous system and neuropsychology.

FY1s are expected to prepare for this post by reading about neuroanatomy and neurological examination before taking up the post.
