Individual Placement Description | |
---|---|
Placement | General (Internal) Medicine |
Year | F1 |
Region | South-East |
Hospital(s) | Borders General Hospital, Melrose |
Main Duties of Placement | Consultant-led ward rounds. SPR ward rounds. FY1 review when neither SPR or consultant are doing a round (SPR or consultants are almost always contactable if there is a problem). 7 nights with Hospital at Night. |
Typical Work Pattern | Ward Days: 9am-5pm. On call admissions (Ward 4): 9am-9pm (but best to get there at 8:45am to deliver the imaging and consultation requests before HAN handover/traffic lights at 9am). 7 nights with Hospital at Night. |
Learning Opportunities | FY1 tutorials every Thursday. Medical grand rounds at Tuesday lunchtime. Medical X-ray meeting Friday lunchtime. |
Teaching | Mandatory FY1 tutorials every Thursday. |
Unique Selling Points | Working directly with consultants, working in a team with the other FY1s and reviewing patients alone rather than sitting in a room doing paperwork and d/c summaries with no patient contact. Getting to know everyone in the hospital very quickly so it's a very friendly and non-intimidating place to work. You get more responsibility than other hospitals but more support from seniors when you need it. Very warm welcome to the incoming FY1s; curry night with programme director and Borders Bash. |
