The FY1 is responsible for macroscopic and microscopic examinations of simple specimens e.g. gallbladders, skin biopsies and appendices.  This is well supported and everything is checked with a consultant before any reports are issued.  The FY1 will be given opportunities to participate in the departmental teaching and to carry out departmental audits and research and personal development time is inbuilt. 

Opportunities in observing post mortem examinations and shadowing other trainees/consultants for more complicated pathological cases.  Opportunity to underpin core learning with out of hours work within Acute Medicine.

This is a unique post where, for the only time, the focus is on learning rather than being relied on for the workload.  There are plenty of opportunities to learn and report simple pathology cases, as well as time for developing other essential skills such as carrying out audits and research.  This is a great post for enhancing your CV for future applications.
