Main Duties of Placement | Daily ward rounds on the Children's Ward and Special Care Baby Unit. Assessment, diagnosis and management of GP and A+E paediatric referrals. On-call bleep holder taking referrals/advice GPs/A+E/Community midwives/Health visitors etc. Newborn baby examination and review in post-natal ward. Review of patients in the Planned Investigation Unit. Paediatric phlebotomy, cannulation. Assisting with paediatric/neonatal resuscitation. |
Typical Work Pattern | Day shift 8am-4pm. Late shift 12-8pm. Night shift 8pm-8am. Weekend shift 8am-8pm. |
Learning Opportunities | Ward-based teaching during ward rounds and review of patients in the assessment bay, often directly from the consultant. Weekly paediatric teaching on the ward, led by FY1 up to consultant level. Medical student attachments provide opportunities for teaching. Attendance at out-patient clinics in General and Specialty Paediatrics. |
Teaching | FY1 teaching one hour once per week (mandatory). Paediatric teaching once per week. |
Unique Selling Points | This job is a great opportunity to gain experience in Paediatrics in a well-supported environment with exposure to a variety of medical paediatric presentations, as well as preterm and neonatal clinical presentations in SCBU. The job allows for a multi-disciplinary team approach to patient care, liaising directly with consultants, advanced neonatal and paediatric nurse practitioners, experienced paediatric nurses and midwives. |
