| Main Duties of Placement | Anaesthetics is mainly theatre-based, supervised by consultants or trainees. Initially, you are based in the emergency theatre gaining an understanding of how anaesthesia works and getting exposure to a variety of urgent and emergency cases. After this you will do a mixture of theatre sessions, pain team ward rounds, and pre-op assessment clinics. The ICU day is structured with hand-over, followed by review of patients, ward round and then ward jobs. Out of hours work will be in the medical assessment unit, attending post take ward rounds, seeing patients as required, learning about acute medicine and helping to gain the competencies required for acute care. These shifts are extended days/ weekend days. |

| Learning Opportunities | Anaesthetics: weekly meeting, impromptu teaching by consultants and trainees. ICU: daily ward-based teaching, weekly trainee teaching, journal club, departmental meetings. MAU: consultant led ward rounds, exposure to deteriorating patients, close working MDT environment, teaching medical students. |
| Teaching | Hospital-wide: FY1 teaching 1 hour per week. Departmental: impromptu teaching; FY1 can also attend trainee teaching 1hour per week. MAU meetings every Friday morning. Grand round: 1 h every Wednesday lunchtime. |
| Unique Selling Points | This is a different FY1 post to those on medical/surgical wards. The emphasis is on learning and development. By always working directly with seniors there are regular opportunities for teaching and development of clinical skills and new procedures. |
